About the Belgian Malinois
Malinois originate from Belgium and were first recoginzed as a distinct breed in the 19th century. They are one of four herding dogs to originate from the area. Each of these shepherds are named after the region in which they were developed - Groenendal, Tervuren, Malinois, and Laekenois, which are anatomically identical but vary in coat length, color, and texture.
According to the American Kennel Club Malinois are "confident, intelligent, and curious. A tireless worker who maintains a lifelong attachment to their owner. This medium sized, sparkling-eyed breed has a no-frills mahogany short coat that sets it apart from three closely related Belgian herding dogs. At home, the breed is a sensitive and affectionate family companion. As a police and military K-9, the malinois possesses exceptinal strength and stamina and is poised to face danger if asked".
We believe that malinois have recently been given a reputation which they don't deserve. Some see malinois as agressive, wild, crazy, high-strung animals that are hard to manage, inclined to bite, and often end up in shelters or worse. It is our goal here at Colorado Moon Malinois to help change that,
A Malinois is not so different from any working class dog and make excellent family companions as long as their needs are understood and met. A lot of what we preceive from any dog comes from what it's owner puts into it. Proper training, exercise, nutrition, veterinary care, and love all have a huge impact on any animal - from chihuahua to Cane Corso and everything in between.
Obtaining an animal from a reputable breeder helps to ensure owners have the best foundation possible to help build their future canine companion. Proper early socialization and upbringing help this foundation. Breeding for even temperament from quality genetics also adds another layer to strengthen this foundation and is arguably one of the most important aspects to this equation.
We strive to preserve and add quality to the breed.
If you've had any experience with a Malinois, then you probably feel the same way we do about the breed and about our dogs. Once you've met one, you don't forget. They're special. They posses intelligence and soul that I've not personally experienced in just any ol' dog. And because of this, we've commited ourselves to educating about, de-stigmatizing, and becomming stewards of this breed.
Overall health, balanced temperament, and drive for work are what we strive for first in our breedings followed by comformation. We hope to showcase the diversity of this breed in each animal we bring into the world.
